About Tonbridge School
Tonbridge School is a public school (English independent day and boarding school for boys 13 -18) in Tonbridge, Kent, England, founded in 1553 by Sir Andrew Judde (sometimes spelled Judd). It is a member of the Eton Group and has close links with the Worshipful Company of Skinners, one of the oldest London livery companies.
There are currently around 800 boys in the school, aged between 13 and 18. The school occupies a site of 150 acres on the edge of Tonbridge, and is largely self-contained, though most of the boarding and day houses are in nearby streets. Since its foundation the school has been rebuilt twice on the original site.

Academic Achievements
Tonbridge encourages all boys to aspire to academic excellence, and our pupils achieve some of the best examination results in the country.
In 2024, an impressive 94 per cent of all grades awarded are A*, A or B, with 75 per cent of those being A* and A. Notably, almost half of the cohort (81 boys) have achieved straight A* and A grades.
These excellent results have secured places for many students at the UK’s top universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College, the London School of Economics, Edinburgh, St Andrews, Durham, Bath and UCL, among others. The majority of leavers have successfully gained entry to their first-choice destinations.
Additionally, a significant number of students have opted to study abroad, with several gaining admission to prestigious U.S. institutions such as the University of Michigan, New York University, Purdue University and UCLA.
Extra-Curricular Activities
Space is made in the regular weekly curriculum for activities and clubs to flourish on a Wednesday afternoon. A set programme of events in the first year introduces new Tonbridgians to the wealth of opportunities that exist in the school. Older boys opt for activities which cater for all tastes.
In their second year boys may choose to join the Royal Navy, Army or RAF sections of the Combined Cadet Force (CCF), or an outward bound activity known as ‘New Terriers’. If they are Art or Music Award holders they may instead concentrate on Art or Music.
In the Sixth Form many boys continue with the CCF and become leaders and mentors to the younger recruits. Others may show their commitment to service through the strong Tonbridge Community Action group (TCA) or our Conservation unit, which includes beekeeping, looking after the school orchards, hedge laying or rearing the school pigs, among other ‘green’ initiatives.
Other activities include: Life Drawing, Music, Debating, Formula 1 Design, Upcycling, The Tonbridgian (school magazine), Film Studies, Investors Club, Archives, Model United Nations, Rackets, Tennis, Game Design, Cookery, History of Art, Hoghead Theatre productions, Technical Theatre, Film Production, Bridge, and Chess. Almost all of the activities listed above can be used for a component of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
Boarding Life
There are seven boarding Houses and five day Houses, each with a complement of about 65 boys. The House system at Tonbridge retains a traditional strength and encourages the loyalty which grows from security within a close-knit community of manageable size. There is a full range of inter-House competitions, at junior and senior levels, throughout the year. Notable among these are the House Music, Art, debating and general knowledge competitions, and the House Leagues in the main sports, which offer a particular opportunity to those who do not play in the major school teams. There are also House plays and House concerts. The great majority of boys naturally find a number of ways in which they can contribute to the life of their House, and such participation is warmly encouraged.
